Majority of Labour MPs back National Commission on Electoral Reform

A majority of Labour MPs support establishing a National Commission on Electoral Reform, according to new YouGov polling reported by LabourList.

Published ahead of Report Stage of the Representation of the People Bill, the polling found that 55% of Labour MPs support a Commission, compared with 29% opposed.

Support also extends across the House of Commons, with 53% of all MPs in favour and 34% opposed.

The findings came as MPs prepared to debate the Representation of the People Bill, with growing pressure on the Government to address the future of the voting system used for Westminster elections.

They also added to the momentum behind Alex Sobel MP’s amendment calling for a National Commission on Electoral Reform, which had attracted support from MPs across Parliament.

Political support for electoral reform has never been stronger. For the first time, majority support among MPs is increasingly aligning with a public that also wants change, creating an unprecedented coalition for taking the next step beyond First Past the Post.
