Labour members: send the #Labour4PR amendment to your CLP secretary

Labour’s draft party programme accepts that First Past the Post is driving distrust and alienation in politics, but does not expressly commit to change.

Representatives on the National Policy Forum (NPF) can submit amendments to be debated and voted on at the ‘Final Stage meeting’ in July.

CLPs have until midday Monday 29 May to ask their regional NPF reps to table the #Labour4PR amendment, which commits Labour to introducing PR.

According to the National Policy Forum, CLPs have until 29 May to submit any final thoughts on the policy documents to policyforum@labour.org.uk, which will be forwarded to our regional NPF reps to consider.
  
I would like our CLP to request that our regional reps put forward Labour for a New Democracy’s amendment in favour of Proportional Representation for general elections (www.l4nd.org.uk/amendment).
  
I would be happy to discuss this if there's time, but I hope we can make this request regardless given our position on PR.
  
The text of the amendment is as follows:
  
On page 47, delete all between “politics” in line 16 and “Labour” in line 19 and substitute “and there is widespread consensus across the Labour movement that we must address this in government. Labour believes the House of Commons should better reflect the votes cast by the British people. We will introduce a proportional electoral system for general elections so everyone has a vote that counts.”

The amended text should read:

The flaws in the current voting system are contributing to the distrust and alienation we see in politics and there is widespread consensus across the Labour movement that we must address this in government. Labour believes the House of Commons should better reflect the votes cast by the British people. We will introduce a proportional electoral system for general elections so everyone has a vote that counts.
