More Labour MPs back a Commission at Bill debate

The House of Commons debated the 'Representation of the People Bill' last night - it's long awaited legislation to shake up UK elections.

More Labour MPs used the opportunity to add their voices to the call for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.

MPs Patrick Hurley (Southport), Cat Smith (Lancaster and Wyre), Chris Curtis (Milton Keynes North) and James Naish (Rushcliffe) argued for Government to take a serious look at our voting system.

The "Second Reading" debate that happened yesterday was the first opportunity to debate the contents of the Bill in principle.

Next, it will go to "Committee Stage", where a smaller group of MPs go through the proposals in detail and consider amendments.

Throughout the process it's important that we continue to build pressure on the Labour benches - and across the House - for real action to address our broken voting system.

Last night was a great result. Thank you for your support, for writing to your MP, and for creating the sea change in Labour in recent years that has created the opportunity we now have to scrap First Past the Post.
