At its annual conference today, the Communication Workers’ Union adopted strong policy in favour of Proportional Representation.

We worked with union activists to table a motion to CWU conference back in 2022, which resulted in the union committing to a review of its policy on electoral reform.

This finally happened last autumn at a special political forum event, addressed by Professor Rob Ford. Credit goes to our friends at Politics For the Many for supporting CWU activists through this process - and in preparation for today's conference.

Today, CWU completed its journey by backing PR. Composite motion 13 instructs the trade union to:

  • Engage with the CWU membership on the need for electoral
reform and the benefits of Proportional Representation.

  • Reject First Past the Post and support the introduction of a
form of Proportional Representation that maintains the
constituency link and in which all votes count equally and
    seats match votes.

  • Call for the Government to hold an independent Commission
    for Electoral Reform

  • To engage with other like-minded trade unions to achieve
    electoral reform.

This means trade unions representing three quarters of Labour affiliates now back PR. The pro-PR unions are:

  • ASLEF

  • CWU

  • FBU

  • MU

  • TSSA

  • Unite

  • Unison

  • Usdaw

Their support is going to be hugely significant as MPs mount a major challenge to First Past the Post - and push for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.
