Burnham returns to Parliament

Labour for a New Democracy and Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform have written to Andy Burnham congratulating him on his election as the new MP for Makerfield.

It is welcome to see one of Labour’s strongest advocates of Proportional Representation return to Westminster. In the letter, we underline the importance of establishing a National Commission on Electoral Reform without delay.

Today one of Labour’s strongest supporters of Proportional Representation takes his place in Parliament. Welcome, Andy Burnham! Now let’s rewire Westminster together so that every voter is fairly heard. #Labour4PR 🌹 @andyburnham.bsky.social

The by-election result came as pressure builds behind calls for electoral reform in Parliament. Alex Sobel’s amendment to the Representation of the People Bill, pushing the Government to establish a National Commission, has now been signed by over 140 MPs, including 80 Labour MPs.

Labour members are adding to this momentum by tabling this motion, calling for urgent action on the voting system, at local branches and CLPs. Table the motion in your local branch to call on the party and all of the Labour MPs in your region to support the proposal for a National Commission on Electoral Reform.
